How easy is it to learn kung fu and kickboxing as an adult?
With regular training, there is no reason why all adults cannot improve their fitness, strength, coordination and flexibility. It is not just an exercise of the body, but also of the mind through regular practice and recall of routines. The Kung Fu syllabus consists of traditional forms that everyone can do, and the Wushu includes spectacular moves and acrobatics that are ideally suited to people with a background in dance, gymnastics and other sports. It's an opportunity to rediscover physical talents and learn new ones. Training is progressive starting with simple forms and techniques. An extensive syllabus offers the chance to build towards many diverse forms, including Northern Shaolin hand forms, weapon forms, acrobatics and self-defence.
I'm worried that I am not fit/flexible enough to take part. Will I still be able to do the class?
The sessions are designed to cater for many levels of ability from complete beginner to seasoned veteran. Nobody turns up "ready-made" to a class. With regular training, fitness, strength and flexibility will all improve.
Do I need any special equipment?
All equipment is provided for new students in the sessions. All you will need to start with is to wear a T-Shirt, jogging bottoms and light training shoes, and bring a bottle of drinking water. Once you have established regular training you will be expected to have your own kickboxing kit such as hand wraps, gloves, pads, or wushu weapons such as swords etc. This can be acquired gradually over time so it is not immediately necessary to spend large amounts on equipment in one go. GMax can supply kit or advise on high quality, good value equipment that you can purchase yourself.
Is there a Membership Fee?
Once you have committed to regular training you will need to become a GMax Club Member so that you are insured to train. Annual Membership is just £30.00 and includes £5m Liability Insurance from the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts (Sport England National Governing Body), 40 page Members Handbook, eligibility to grade and compete, reduced fees for GMax events, and special offers. Membership is discounted for multiple family members.
What is "Wushu"?
“Wushu” is a Mandarin word meaning “martial art”. “Kung fu” is a Chinese term often used to refer to Chinese martial arts. Its original meaning is somewhat different, referring to one's expertise in any skill, not necessarily martial arts. The literal translation of “kung fu” would be “human achievement”, but it is generally understood to refer to Chinese martial arts in the English language. “Wushu” is also a generic term used to describe the national sport of China. Wushu in this sense of the word is a sporting form of Chinese martial arts that has been developed since 1958. It is often performed with great speed and agility, and features many spectacular jumping kicks, twisting aerial movements and acrobatics. This “modern or contemporary wushu” is more akin to gymnastics or dance performance. Most of the “traditional wushu” methods and routines of Chin Woo are more grounded in form and relate more closely to training and practising fighting techniques.
What is "Sanda/San Shou"?
Sanda, also known as San Shou, Chinese boxing or Chinese kickboxing, is a Chinese self-defence system and combat sport. Originally developed by the Chinese military, it is based upon the study and practices of traditional Kung Fu and modern combat fighting techniques. As a sport it combines kickboxing with wrestling, takedowns, throws, sweeps, leg catches, and in some competitions, elbow and knee strikes.
Are gradings compulsory?
Grading is a great way to benchmark your progress in the sport and build confidence. It is not compulsory for Kickboxing students to participate in gradings, but it is encouraged. Students studying Chin Woo Wushu are expected to grade regularly as they progress through the syllabus. All students can learn at their own pace and only grade when their coach feels they are ready to meet the requirements of the grading. Gradings in each discipline are held approximately every four months.
Will martial arts training make my child violent?
Although GMax Academy sessions are informal and fun, they emphasise the importance of self discipline. Learning a martial art is about self improvement and avoiding conflict. It is equally important to learn how not to be a bully as it is to not be a victim. Although the self protection applications of kung fu are taught and practised, Wushu is a non-contact sport akin to gymnastics. Sparring is optional for Kickboxing students, with the emphasis on accuracy, control, good sportsmanship and a healthy team spirit. Anyone found to be misusing what they are taught at GMax Academy classes will be immediately expelled from the association without compensation.
Do you teach MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)?
Mixed Martial Arts has developed over a number of years by employing the practical striking and grappling applications of many traditional martial arts techniques. Although GMax classes do not teach the sport of MMA, many techniques practised in both the Kickboxing and Wushu sessions are relevant to some aspects of MMA training.
