Kickboxing combines Western boxing with the kicking and sweeping techniques of traditional martial arts. Its growth and popularity originated in the United States in the 1970s, with traditional karate competitors wanting a more free form of sparring.
Kickboxing is now very popular with men and women around the world, as a sport and form of fitness training. Benefits include improved flexibility, coordination, aerobic and cardiovascular fitness, muscle conditioning and toning, along with increased confidence and self defence skills.
Celebrities who have practiced kickboxing include Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears, Geri Halliwell, Jennifer Lopez, Lennox Lewis, Madonna, Wesley Snipes and Halle Berry.
Variations of kickboxing include Thai boxing, where the elbows and knees can be used, San Shou (Chinese Boxing), which includes throws, and various forms of military training, especially in Eastern Europe.
Classes are open to all levels of ability. A common misconception is that “I’m not fit enough to take part”. Nobody comes to the class “ready-made”, and fitness is just one of the many benefits to be gained from training. Classes are 90 minutes long and include aerobic and cardiovascular training, muscle conditioning and toning, punching, kicking and defence techniques, pad work, and a lot of fun! Participants should wear jogging bottoms, T-shirt, light plimsoles/trainers, and bring a bottle of water.
GENERAL CLASSES ARE NON-SPARRING, and although we offer a Kickboxing Syllabus and belt system, Kickboxing Gradings are not compulsory.
